Head of civil and structural engineering, Michelle McDowell is presenting the keynote address at the official opening of the new wing of the Queen’s Building at the University of Bristol. Michelle studied at the university and was awarded an honorary doctorate and has been invited to speak about her experiences there and how they shaped her career and achievements. She will talk about her role leading the civil and structural engineering profession across BDP where she has led many award-winning projects, including the redevelopment of the Royal Albert Hall, BBC Mailbox and Roche Headquarters, as well as her current role leading the interdisciplinary team delivering the restoration and renewal of the Palace of Westminster. Michelle also champions engineering as a career for everybody, promoting diversity and acting as a mentor both within BDP and across the wider industry and she will emphasise the need for a diverse workplace and her vision for the future of engineering in all its forms.

Invited guests will celebrate the official opening of the building with tours of the new electrical and electronic engineering lab, as well as the new propulsion and general engineering labs which together enable expansion of the university’s world-class facilities and cutting edge research.
