BDP wins European Healthcare Design Award

The Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital in Bristol has won Best Healthcare Design over 25,000sqm at the European Healthcare Design Awards, which were announced on 13 June at the Royal College of Physicians in London. The awards celebrate and recognise professional excellence in the design of healthcare environments both in Europe and around the world.

The £430m building, designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent with a carbon footprint below government targets, is the most sustainable major acute hospital in the UK.

Tricia Down from North Bristol NHS Trust collected the award alongside BDP’s Head of Healthcare Andrew Smith, architect director Max Martin and Principal Ged Couser. She said “people are universally praising the design and quality of the space of the building. It is truly magnificent.”

The judges said: “This was an impressive project with a simple, clear objective that stood out to the judges. The project demonstrated clear detail on a community link, with an excellent focus on flexibility and expansion. Some key design features recognised included numerous sustainable solutions applied, in addition to detail on arts and apprentice schemes.”

BDP provided architectural, landscape, interior and graphic design services alongside site masterplanning for the 800 bed hospital.

BDP won the same category at last year’s European Healthcare Design Awards for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
