Plans approved for Meadowhall Extension

Plans for a £300m extension to the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield have been approved.

Designed by BDP the 30,000 sqm Leisure Hall will add a range of dining and entertainment experiences not currently available at the centre. These include new restaurants, a state-of-the-art cinema, a new café court, gym and other leisure space.

Housed under a glazed roof, the extension will integrate with the existing centre to create a new multi-levelled, landscaped mall with high quality internal and external spaces. It has also been designed to accommodate large outdoor events including live music.

Architect director Garry Wilding said “The Leisure Hall extension will create a new identity for Meadowhall and provide a sequence of dynamic dining and entertainment spaces under a landmark glazed roof, significantly improving the customer’s experience of visiting the centre. The project will follow on from our extensive interior refurbishment of the centre itself, which is due to complete later this year, creating a new holistic vision for Meadowhall.”

BDP is architect, interior designer, landscape architect and lighting designer for the scheme which is expected to complete in 2021.
