Smythe Library wins FX Award

Smythe Library at Tonbridge School was selected out of 11 other projects, as the winner of the Lighting Design category at the FX International Interior Design Awards on 29 November. The awards which celebrate world-class design excellence were held this year at the Grosvenor House Hotel and were hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr.

Smythe Library was praised by the judges as a “Very well executed scheme with good use of low-level and integral lighting throughout as well as consideration of the balance between daylight and artificial light. The lighting brings new energy to an academic backdrop.”

BDP was appointed by Tonbridge School to refurbish the library, providing architecture, environmental engineering, interior design, lighting and acoustic services. Since completion, the design has gone on to win major awards including an AJ Retrofit.
