Plans Revealed for Colindale Station

BDP has designed a new step free access station building for Colindale in London. The scheme includes an enlarged ticket hall, ground floor commercial space and improvements to the surrounding public realm.

The station is part of the Colindale Area Action Plan by Barnet Council which would also see up to 350 new homes on the site, and will accommodate the area’s expected increase in population in the next few years.

Colindale has a rich aviation history and the new station takes its architectural influence from this heritage. The proposed design incorporates an innovative solution for a hybrid timber and steel roof structure, which supports the station’s floor. The exposed glued laminated structure references early aeronautical engineering and reveals the structure behind the station’s suspended floor.

The bronze and timber internal finishes create subtle references to early aircraft. Angled soffits, combined with the gentle curve of the beams, further enhance the spaciousness of the concourse and provide integrated lighting. The profile of the roof gives the station a sense of identity and is visible from Colindale Avenue. The profile sits comfortably with the architectural approach to the adjacent residential blocks whilst creating a sense of gateway and identity for the station.

Plans for the development were submitted in December 2018 and work could begin on site in 2021 with completion by 2022.
