Project details

The ESI is a highly sustainable new building comprising bio-science research laboratories, engineering workshops, academic and research space. The building is a ‘living laboratory’ for the testing of environmental equipment and sustainable solutions and demonstrates this through the activities within and the way in which it is constructed and designed.

The landmark facility is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary working and it has developed a hierarchy of write-up and research spaces from shared, cellular, quiet spaces to open plan areas.

The ESI has been designed to the highest standards of environmental performance through design, construction and occupation. It is the South West’s first building to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding emphasising its significance as a centre of excellence in environmental research and raising its profile in order to attract world class researchers.

BDP won the project due to their pragmatic engineering-led approach which was appropriate for a building where BREEAM Outstanding was essential. We were particularly impressed with BDP's willingness to explore various options during the design phase and their proactive attitude to cost savings and a number of client-imposed amendments to the brief. The finished building is a delight to use. Those who work in the ESI are enthusiastic about their new environment and that they work in one of the highest scoring BREEAM buildings in the UK!
