Project details

BDP's restoration of the historic Grade II listed Calder and Hebble Navigation Warehouse, the jewel in the Wakefield Waterfront masterplan developed by FaulknerBrowns.

The restoration of a grain warehouse built in 1816 and used virtually continuously until the 1980s after which it began to decay.

The design and conservation philosophy included the maximum retention of original fabric, repair of the fabric using matching materials and techniques, optimising the thermal performance of the building, introducing new vertical circulation, building engineering services and other necessary interventions in a well-designed contemporary idiom, clearly articulated from the historic fabric.

Brief

  • to  repair the building with care and to convert it for office use on the upper floors and bar/restaurant use on the ground floor
  • to keep modern interventions subservient to the historic building

Results

  • the repaired building retains most of its original form and appearance, both internally and externally, and about 95% of its original material, but now provides fully serviced office and A3 accommodation of a high standard
  • the building has been extremely well received by the local community
  • RIBA Award 2010, Civic Trust Commendation 2010, RICS Regional Award 2010, Wakefield Civic Society special award 2009, Manchester Society of Architects Award 2009, 2009 Georgian Group Award.
