Project details

New life for a major heritage site.

We kept the existing street pattern but enhanced the close-grained fabric of the block with a series of courtyards linked by separate pedestrian and vehicular routes.

We repaired and converted the existing structures for a range of residential and commercial uses.

The aesthetic of the area was preserved while boosting floor space with carefully balanced new infill buildings that varied between two and six storeys.

Brief

  • regenerate an historic urban city area for a mix of new functions
  • preserve the fabric and appearance of seven listed buildings
  • maintain the character of the world’s only surviving first-generation engineering works

Results

  • 6,975 sq m (75,000 sq ft) of new commercial and retail space
  • better linkages and cross-site routes for pedestrians
  • 94 new apartments, including affordable housing
  • full provision for parking and other amenities
  • new attraction for Leeds
  • awards include RICS Award 2005 and British Council of Offices Special Regional Award 2004
