Sustainability

“Sustainability goes far beyond carbon emissions. It is about changing mindsets and behaviours. It requires an integrated and collaborative approach to design, operation and management from all stakeholders. Collective ambition is critical, and our aim is to drive this through effective advocacy, analysis and thought leadership.”
Lucy Townsend, Head of Sustainability

Information

The delivery of a holistic sustainable design sits at the centre of BDP's design philosophy. Sustainable outcomes are fundamental to our overarching approach to delivering Places for People and our aim is to deliver environmentally, socially and economically progressive places, focused on maximising the health, wellbeing, happiness and productivity of the people who use them.

With our in house sustainability and design expertise we work closely with clients to identify sustainability drivers and establish sustainability policies, objectives and targets for proposed developments that respond to the global climate and biodiversity emergency. Considering all impacts of a project at the outset, and maintaining scrutiny throughout enables us to maximise the positive impact development can deliver. The delivery of a sustainable building will not necessarily deliver a sustainable development. How the building is operated by its users, within its context and the implications for resource use associated with transport, water and waste management, for example, is crucial.

In addition, our holistic understanding of the dependencies and interaction between urban design and the sustainability agenda ensures our proposals are capable of responding to an ever-changing legislative, economic and technological landscape.

We are actively engaged with industry to ensure that we are contributing to the national and global agenda, and that our design approach continues to deliver progressive, practical and financially sound solutions in response to environmental, social and economic challenges.

Sustainable Consultancy

Our sustainability team offers a wide range of consultancy, assessment, design and management support services. Sitting at the heart of BDP's operation, we are able to utilise skills from across the practice. We possess specialist expertise in life-cycle assessment, circular economy and resource management, energy and carbon consultancy and ecology services and have expertise in developing, implementing and monitoring bespoke development environmental strategies. We also hold licences for all major UK and North American environmental assessment methodologies, including BREEAM, LEED, WELL Standard, fitwel, and SKA assessments.

The sustainability team also manages and monitors BDP's Sustainability Policy and ISO 14001 and 50001 certification, which we have held since 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Head of Sustainability Lucy Townsend sits on the BDPLab panel, and is responsible for our Shared Value strategy.
