Olympic Tennis Centre, Athens
One of the few British connections with the Olympics in Athens is the design of the Tennis Centre.
Richard Rees, architect director of BDP, used the practice's experience in Sydney and Wimbledon to guide the master plan and the design of the facilities. Although produced to a tight budget the Centre uses the best aspects of the Sydney Tennis Centre - the steep and intimate Centre Court design, and Wimbledon's No 1 Court- a clever use of levels and attached hospitality elements, to provide a neat venue that has won the wholehearted approval of the International Tennis Federation and will be the arena for the battle between the likes of Henman and Federer from August 16th.
Potiropoulos Architect of Athens, runners up in the Acropolis Museum Competition, realised the scheme on behalf of the developer.
