Walthamstow Recognised by BCSC

The retail property organisation BCSC has commended the BDP designed Walthamstow High Street and Town Square and Gardens in London in its 2004 Town Centre Environment Gold Standard Awards jury.

The Awards, which were announced at BCSC's annual conference in Manchester 1-3 November, spotlight projects which are helping to revitalise the economic and social lifeblood of towns and cities across the UK.

The judging criteria encompass effective use of design and community interaction.  The chairman of the judges said "The awards are an accolade for those concerned with urban renaissance and reward those who promote vibrant, competitive locations. We have looked for public realm regeneration work that encourages more people back into town centres. These projects often use new developments, public space, transportation improvements, imaginative design, accessibility and safety. It's clear that more local authorities are being proactive in addressing these aspects."

The judges said "At Walthamstow Town Square and Gardens, the objective was to create a public space that encourages activity throughout the year, within an environment that is stimulating, safe and accessible to all. It was important to have a safe and attractive transition between the rail and tube stations, the town's new bus station and the High Street and shopping centre and also to improve play facilities for children. The town's historic market situated along the High Street, reputed to be the longest in Europe, is intensively used by traders and locals alike. Street lighting and power supplies to the stalls have been improved and a more practical paving surface introduced. Proposals are now in place to improve the evening economy."
BDP director Andrew Tindsley commented - "This project marks an early success in the London Borough of Waltham Forest's regeneration strategy for Walthamstow town centre and is the result of close collaboration between the local authority, the local business and residential community and public transport providers. "

BDP was urban designer, landscape architect, electrical and drainage engineer and lighting designer.  Clarus Consulting was cost manager.
