BDP Wins Urban Realm Competition in China

BDP has won a competition to design a new town square and public park in the historic quarter of Shenzhen in China. The winning design was influenced by both historic and existing structures to ensure they are integrated into the new urban environment and are given a setting that respects their role, style and scale. Historic buildings, structures and spaces have been identified for restoration, and will be greatly enhanced by the introduction of window frontages and canopies, new signage and improved lighting.

A new park shaped by a network of pathways will extend the grain of the city and will form a series of terraces, paths, steps, channels and structures that reflect the natural topography of the land.

A lotus pool with associated waterfalls, interactive fountains and a reflecting solar pool will be an important focus to the park, and act as a gateway to the town. A stone ribbon with localised photovoltaic inserts will provide information and guide people through the park and into the centre of the city.

Pedestrian movement will be encouraged along the historic city wall which is an important connection between the city and the park, and will be the point at which old world and new world meet. Individual enclosed gardens and expansive lawns will create a living wall, extending from east to west, and provide a linear space for a broad range of public activities.

Director Nick Edwards said: “The ancient city has a proud and important history, having many valuable built and natural assets. It has interesting streets and spaces, and is largely free from vehicles, with the potential to be a great place in which to live, work and spend time. This project presents a tremendous opportunity to incrementally repair the buildings, public realm and open spaces of the city and make its streets, spaces and park places for people”.
