James
Warne
Environmental engineering director, chair of sustainability
London
James aims to design and deliver sustainable development with a high quality of built environment, via the industry’s brightest engineers and designers found under BDP’s umbrella of environmental engineering.
James has moved across sectors and enjoyed the opportunities presented by cross fertilisation and the growth of sustainable design. This has led to exemplar design solutions including Roche HQ, a number of award winning academies and schools, Harare British Embassy and Hale Village mixed use scheme.
The Roche HQ set a great benchmark by which to compare the success of future offices and similarly Leigh Technology Academy sets the benchmark for low energy, high technology schools. However James knows the biggest achievement is in the next project.
What will be the key characteristic of life in your industry in 2050?
“Life is resilient and innovative; I think we will adapt to the challenges of climate change, accepting the inevitable consequences, engineering the necessary measures and we will adopt a cultural shift already visible in our young children. This means buildings will change, architecture will adapt, becoming more flexible and robust in use, and I think environmental engineering will facilitate these changes.”
