John Wakes

Director, architecture; head of transport

London

John is a main board director. Since joining BDP John has worked in a number of studios in a variety of sectors including retail, education, residential and cultural buildings but he is now focused on transport.

John is responsible for an architecture team which has in recent years designed sports projects for tennis at Wimbledon, Beijing, Athens and Sydney; for horse racing at Aintree and Leopardstown; for football at Ipswich Town and the National Football Centre and is currently involved in projects for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

John's remit also covers the design of transport hubs for rail, air and bus. It is an important sector for BDP and John's aim is to grow this varied portfolio successfully both for us and for our clients.

Where do you see the architecture practices of the future?
"There will be larger practices performing on a global stage.  The design specialisms that we have are now transferable across countries and continents. The brand of these international practices will become even more important."
