Waverley Court

New Council headquarters building in the heart of Edinburgh.

Our team decided from the outset to create a landmark building which would demonstrate environmental excellence with exceptional levels of accessibility.  The new building replaces some 20 other council buildings.

Lengthy analysis of the surrounding buildings, and associated views to and from the site, resulted in a stepped section and massing that reflects the valley form against the backdrop of the Old Town.

Modern office accommodation for 1600 staff is integrated with enhanced public transport facilities.

Brief

  • a bespoke D&B building to allow the council to benefit from the economic and environmental advantages of operating from a single site
  • provide a sociable and dynamic working environment

Results

  • brings all of the Council’s customer service staff under one roof and ensures better access for the public
  • one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in Edinburgh
  • adjacent Waverley, Edinburgh’s busiest railway station, remained operational throughout construction
