Byker in Newcastle-on-Tyne and Clare Hall, University of Cambridge: projects on a vastly different urban scale reveal a commonality of approach to designing for people by Ralph Erskine and his team. Over 40 years since the first project was completed, the Viennese photographer Andrea Baczynski orchestrated people living in Byker and fellows from Clare Hall into photographing their respective communities. Using disposable cameras distributed by the artist the photos capture an unselfconscious view of Ralph Erskine's urban design and language of architecture and placemaking. BDP Chairman, Tony McGuirk, hosts this public exhibition, having worked with Erskine on Byker Wall.

"In life, architects must understand the behaviour of people in the spaces we create. The presence of people and their activity  transforms 'space' into 'place'. Instead of housing or working areas, we should strive to create places for life".
