A new state-of-the-art train station.
The two-storey station layout comprises a public concourse spanning Intercity rail tracks with stair and lift access to the three new platforms, and future provision for a fourth platform once railway track capacity is increased.
The key design feature is the floating roof which has been developed as a prototype for the other proposed stations on the route. A semi-open concourse level is ‘roofed’ by a striking light weight space frame structure covered by semi-translucent PTFE fabric material. This partially open structure provides both natural ventilation and daylighting to the public concourse.
The station’s nerve centre is located within two enamelled steel-clad pods that sit either side of the concourse level and house the state-of-the-art ticket office and staff facilities, retail unit, and public amenities as well as significant track signalling, telecoms and services equipment.
