Nottingham Breast Institute

Design for the leading breast cancer centre in the UK.

The institute accommodates out-patient diagnosis, treatment and follow-up clinics for 35,000 patients each year. We desgined the new building to be simple and elegant with a non-institutional feel.

It has a welcoming architecture which is non threatening and engenders a sense of calm amongst patients who could be in a state of anxiety.

Brief

  • design a new landmark building to reflect the importance of the internationally recognised facility for the treatment of breast cancer
  • design a ‘one stop’ clinic that would help reduce waiting lists and number of patient returns

Results

  • the building brings together all out-patient services for breast cancer patients under one roof for the first time
  • staff performance targets have significantly improved
  • it is economic, flexible, energy efficient and sustainable
