Platform for Design: Stations Art and Public Space

When: 6 May – 14 June
Where: The Practice Space, 2nd floor, Royal Institute of British Architects, 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD

BDP’s model of Whitechapel station is part of a new Crossrail exhibition in the RIBA’s practice space. The modernised station will have a new entrance and step-free access between the street and all services at the station. A spectacular walkway alongside the concourse will provide a new public pedestrian route for passengers and local residents and the historic features and unique personality of the existing station will be enhanced as much as possible.

Crossrail is Europe’s largest infrastructure project delivering 10 new stations, 30 station upgrades, 42 km of tunnels and 40 urban realm improvements. The new station images are on display in this free exhibition with each station designed to respond to its unique setting and community. For the first time on a project of this scale the public spaces and commercial developments above ground are designed to help the new railway link blend into its surroundings.

Nick Edwards is one of the panellists for an event at the RIBA on 14 June from 18.00 – 20.00, organised as part of the London Festival of Architecture. Nick will be joined by Rob Naybour of Weston Williamson (Paddington Station), Jan Kroes of Fereday Pollard (Abbey Wood) and Sam Richards of Crossrail Urban Realm who will discuss their response to local context in the design of the new stations. The free event will be chaired by Hugh Pearman, Editor of RIBA Journal and tickets can be booked at http://architecturediary.org/london/events/6479
