Lighting Conversations Webinar

When: Tuesday 9th June 18.30

Lighting director Colin Ball will join art historian and broadcaster, Dr James Fox, for the next in a series of Lighting Conversation webinars organised by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD). They will discuss the social and historical significance of light in art and architecture, looking at how architecture has always been used as a method of communication and how the need to either increase or reduce light tells the story of a building’s use. Colin and James will also explore how light has been used in art to convey a narrative.

Colin is a member of the IALD committee and has a particular interest in the role of light and dark within religious settings and the connection between light, art and society. He is a regular presenter on the subject of colour in lighting, exploring why blue lighting is so popular and encouraging a shift to red light in urban areas. He has designed the lighting on many award winning projects and is currently working on the restoration and renewal of the Palace of Westminster.

James is a BAFTA nominated broadcaster, frequently seen on BBC4, and his series have included Age of the Image, exploring how technological advances in the early 20th century created new ways of seeing the world. Other programmes include Bright Lights, Brilliant Minds - A Tale of Three Cities and The Art of Japanese Life, examining the art and culture of Japan. He is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and specialises in 20th century art and contemporary art.
