BDP engineers invited to the House of Commons

Two of BDP’s women engineers were invited to attend the House of Commons this week for their expert opinions.

On 21 October Caroline Stassen, an environmental engineer from the London studio spoke at a Parliamentary launch event as part of Professions Week. The event was chaired by Sarah Hathaway, head of ACCA UK, and other speakers included Rt Hon Gillian Shepherd, Barry Sheerman MP, Gordon Marsden MP and Ann Franke, CEO of Chartered Management Institute.

The aim of the event, which was attended by 200 people, was to launch a collaborative project between 15 professional bodies aimed at transforming the awareness and understanding of the professions among young people (age 14-19). Caroline gave a speech on how early engagement with a professional body transformed her career.

Michelle McDowell MBE, chair of civil and structural engineering at BDP, was invited to a lunch talk on 24 October hosted by Peter Luff MP and Engineering UK. The open discussion entitled “The Global Race: how to beat the competition” was attended by MPs and Managing Directors to discuss how the UK can maintain its competitive edge.
