Official opening for Nottingham Midland Station

Nottingham Midland Station was officially opened today [26 November] by William McAlpine (chairman of the Railway Heritage Trust) and the Sherriff of Nottingham after three years of refurbishment work which has given the Grade II listed building a new lease of life.

BDP prepared design proposals to upgrade the station for Nottingham City Council in 2009, and the project was delivered by Pascall+Watson architects. The major upgrade and new south concourse was fully reopened to the public earlier this year.

Nottingham Midland Station was developed in its current form and arrangement around the turn of the 20th century and in recent years had suffered from maintenance neglect. The primary purpose of the refurbishment was to improve the function and perception of the station for users and operators, and create a world class facility which meets the needs and aspirations of current and future activities.

The remodelling saw the removal of the car and taxi drop-off point from the porte-cochère to create a new enclosed passenger space at the front and now connects all the various facilities including booking hall, the new south concourse and retail.

The platform environment has been enhanced with the addition of new lifts, reglazing of the canopies and a new dispersal bridge. The new south concourse provides connections to the various elements of the station, including the Nottingham tramline, and a multi-storey car park designed by BDP, which opened in 2012.

The new buildings have been designed to complement, enhance and expand the existing station complex while preserving its special character and ensuring its future functionality.
