Lady Grenfell Baines on New Year Honours List

Lady Grenfell BainesMilena Grenfell Baines, the wife of BDP’s founder Professor Sir George Grenfell Baines, has been awarded an MBE in the 2016 New Year Honours List for her services to music.

She is a fundraiser and patron for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and spoke of her delight at receiving the royal honour.

She said: “It is a total surprise. I had no idea that my friends had been plotting this for quite a long time. I was lost for words when I got the news. I have been involved with the Philharmonic Orchestra for nearly 40 years and my aim has always been to encourage people - particularly young people - to give classical music a chance.”

Lady Grenfell Baines continues to take a keen interest in BDP and is a great advocate for the practice wherever in the world she has been travelling.

Last year she was given the Honorary Freedom of the City of Preston where she has been a notable citizen for more than 50 years, and where her ‘remarkable spirit and energy to all the different aspects of her life’ was commended.
