BDP wins masterplanning role at Cardiff University's Innovation Campus

BDP have won the masterplanning role at the Innovation Campus for Cardiff University. The high-profile £300m project is an ambitious development that will deliver four new research centres on the brownfield Maindy Road site in Cathays; the same campus on which the Bristol engineering team delivered the RICS Award 2015 Highly Commended Haydn Ellis Medical Research Faculty.

The project as a whole fulfils a number of functional uses and aspirations for Cardiff University and aims to facilitate world-leading scientific research, inter-disciplinary mixing and increase student opportunities. This first tranche of development contains a world-first social science research park called SPARK, an Innovation Centre to help start-up firms, a Translational Research Facility that will assist in turning academic research into applications in the real world, and a Research Institute for Compound Semiconductor Technology. The public realm element of the project includes landscaping and car parking provision to provide high quality external spaces.

Public realm construction costs are circa £5m. The appointment also includes the role of Principal Designer under CDM 2015.

The service will be led by Martin Jones.
