Project details

The building uses its steeply sloping site to full potential, minimising the impact on its greenfield location

From the street the school appears as a single storey building, once inside it opens in scale and cascades down opening up to the playing fields beyond.

Five learning fingers are arranged around a central heartspace, which houses the school’s communal activities and resources.

Brief

  • provide a transformational learning environment capable of adapting to meet future changes
  • integration with landscape and outdoor teaching spaces, sustainability, inclusiveness, community use, passive supervision and minimising the potential for bullying were key requirements

Results

  • first school to complete as part of Barnsley’s Building Schools for the Future programme
  • a legible building promoting a sense of safety and security
  • shortlisted for a RIBA Award 2011
