Project details

Ayr Academy sits within the 18th century Craigie Estate on the banks of the River Ayr. With the University of West of Scotland, Ayrshire College, Dam Park Stadium and the Category A listed Georgian mansion, Craigie House, all based on the estate, the introduction of the new school has created a campus.

The three storey building contains learning spaces positioned around a central atrium, which is inspired by the pupils' desire to recreate the spirit of their original Victorian Ayr Academy central hall. Other spaces include two double height learning plazas used for team activities, a large entrance with a reception, cafe and exhibition space.

Shelters and changing facilities are designed into the woodlands to encourage cycling or walking. The glazed atrium offers views of the parkland site and externally the building is wrapped in patinated copper coloured cladding with the base clad in stone.
