Project details

The new medical research building for the University of Cardiff includes an exhibition space and atrium, a 150 person lecture theatre, café, seminar suite, research clinic, graduate school, research support services and administrative facilities. The use of visual concrete turns a potentially ordinary research facility into an extraordinary space which engenders creativity, harmony and collaboration.

The laboratory block is designed as a fat slab structure to facilitate the distribution of laboratory services. The front building, housing the write up and public areas, is formed from solid slabs supported by downstand concrete beams displaying exposed soffits. The floors of both blocks are supported on insitu reinforced concrete columns and stabilised by concrete shear walls.

The space is absolutely wonderful… you can do business; you can see how people can come together and communicate with each other

Edwina Hart, Economy & Science Minister
