Project details

Flagship regional shopping centre in the heart of Southampton.

Enclosed, naturally lit malls unite the town centre with the heart of the development using retailing on two floors, with the upper level linking directly into the city’s prime shopping street, Above Bar.

The scale of the building increases across the site from east to west. Two-storey malls with double height shop fronts culminate in a dramatic third floor 2000 seat food terrace with views over the river and the waterfront.

This project took 10 years from masterplan inception to design & build completion.

Brief

  • a masterplan to reverse the decline of Southampton’s city centre
  • link city’s prime retail area  Above Bar with the waterfront and railway
  • design a mixed use retail-led development of 75,000 sq m (800,000 sq ft)

Results

  • design positively responds to the maritime tradition of Southampton and takes inspiration from the existing buildings set back from the medieval town walls
  • has significantly improved, the urban environment by transforming a derelict industrial site and creating new linkages to the landscaped, pedestrianised High Street
