Project details

The Digby Stuart residences provide accommodation for 400 students and a state-of-the-art Conference Centre with a 120 seat seminar space, breakout spaces, meeting and teaching rooms, and a flexible events space with catering facilities. A roof terrace overlooks the rejuvenated historic landscape and offers views above the tree canopy towards central London.

The environmental design concept was to optimise passive strategies such as natural ventilation and good daylight, combining them with a high performance building fabric and exposed thermal mass to reduce thermal energy consumption.

Where active building services systems were required they are low energy, efficient and simple to operate and maintain. A gas fired Combined Heat and Power engine delivers the base hot water load to the ensuite bathrooms and provides low carbon electricity to the wider campus.

Brief

  • deliver high quality accommodation that enhances students and staff experience of the university whilst attracting more visitors
  • advise on engineering at all stages for a single coordinated design across all three projects implemented on two construction phases, within an active campus that is fully operational throughout construction

Results

  • extensive prefabrications with minimal disruption to the university
  • a facade that maximises natural daylight and allows airy and comfortable internal spaces

Integrated services

civil and structural engineering, building services engineering, acoustic, sustainability, lighting
