Project details

BDP has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with London South Bank University (LSBU) over the past decade, and has provided multi-disciplinary services for the redevelopment St George’s Quarter, a major new addition to its Elephant and Castle campus providing 20,000 sqm of new academic space. This forms a key part of the university’s estate strategy leading up to 2030.

St George’s Quarter will act as a front door for the campus, allowing 24/7 student access and improving connectivity to various existing adjacent buildings. The scheme includes a new learning centre with a flexible space for students and the local community, . Working with WilkinsonEyre Architects, our engineers incorporated an open loop borehole installation that provides low carbon heating and cooling in the design.

BDP’s town planning team secured planning consent in 2018 and is now advising on delivery of the scheme, securing a section 73 minor material amendment to facilitate a revised phasing. BDP Planning has assisted LSBU in forging strong relationships with a variety of local stakeholders and organisations, including LB Southwark, the GLA and TfL. This is key to establishing the university as a trusted developer within Southwark, which is key to successful planning negotiations.

BDP has also obtained permission for the comprehensive refurbishment of London South Bank University Hub, one of its major teaching spaces.
