UCL Student Centre wins Lighting Award

UCL Student Centre has won Office, Education and Healthcare Lighting Project of the Year at the Lux Awards which celebrate the best lighting projects, products and professionals. The awards were announced on 14 November at the Hilton Park Lane, coinciding with the LuxLive exhibition.

The BREEAM Outstanding student centre, which has been recognised for its exemplary sustainability credentials, has an estimated 35% annual carbon dioxide reduction. Our designers delivered a high quality and energy efficient lighting strategy for the building which has 24 hour access, supporting its agile space which enables furniture and partitions to be reconfigured.

A key lighting feature is the photocells on the roof that link to the lighting control system to make use of available natural light. Presence and absence detection is employed in all individual rooms to prevent the waste of energy. Automatic scene setting scrolls for several scenarios throughout the day and evening create a dynamic lit effect that enhances the building’s flexibility.

The centre has won several awards including Education Estates’ Project of the Year and Pupil/Student Experience Award. Our building services engineers worked alongside our acoustic and lighting designers to deliver the project which was designed by Nicholas Hare Architects.
