Gavin is a principal and head of our Manchester studio. He also leads the sport sector for the practice.

Gavin joined straight from university and he has had the good fortune that nearly all the projects he has worked on have been built. He and his team have particular strength in education, residential, sports and interior projects in the region. His projects include the redesign of Aintree Racecourse, Abito apartments and the phased redevelopment of the Lancashire Country Cricket Club. He was also the design lead on the award-winning Boxpark projects at both Croydon and Wembley.

Gavin is also an ex-chair of the Manchester: A Certain Future steering group.

What is your biggest personal influence?

I think you learn all the time, from everyone – which is why it’s great to work in a big practice with so many clever people. But the core attributes of the architect as a shaper of space and creator of places remain the same.

Lancashire County Cricket Club

Radical re-development of Old Trafford cricket ground, set to transform the historic venue into one of the country’s premier sporting destinations.

Aintree Racecourse

BDP reconfigured the entire racecourse around key user needs. The project included placing the stables, new pre-parade ring and main parade ring in a logical, safer sequence.

Abito Apartments

Modular apartments for smarter 21st-century living. We created a modular building, designing a nine-storey 256-apartment scheme from the inside out.

Music Boxes, Manchester International Festival

A melodic adventure for children ages 6 months to 7 years.

Devonshire Primary School

State-of-the-art school on a restricted site. The design is built around user needs and natural daylight: classrooms face north — ensuring good day lighting without overheating — and play decks face south, with shelter providing protection from the sun.

Wooldale Centre for Learning

A national model for the future with world class facilities. The whole campus provides a barrier-free environment, with special attention paid to generous circulation areas and minimum number of doors.

Halifax Headquarters - refurbishment

An evolving HQ that cares for staff and customers. We worked with the society’s executive to clarify the brief, building it around HQ functions, working practices, staff relationships and equipment needs.

Internal refurbishment and reconfiguration of VIP, directors, press and corporate hospitality areas sited in historic South Stand.

Boxpark Croydon

Boxpark is a new food and drink concept for Croydon as part of the mixed-use Ruskin Square development.

Boxpark Wembley

Boxpark Wembley is a cultural dining destination with 29 food and drink units alongside events spaces for up to 2,300.

BDP to design Boxpark Croydon

The London Borough of Croydon has announced today at MIPIM, a major new deal to open a new Boxpark Marketplace next to East Croydon train station. BDP has been appointed to design the scheme.
