Neil is an architect director and heads the retail architect team in Bristol.

Neil has led a number of important masterplan bids for BDP including the major retail-led regeneration of Swansea city centre with Hammerson and Urban Splash and has contributed to masterplan proposals for Ashburton and Yeovil. His team also works at the other end of the spectrum such as a small development of eco homes in Frome, Somerset for a local developer as well as specialist projects in the education sector.

One of his projects, the Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI), on the Combined Universities in Cornwall’s Falmouth campus, achieved a score of 91.57%, one of the highest BREEAM Outstanding scores in the UK. A regular presenter, Neil recently spoke at the Making Buildings Smart conference at the ESI at the invitation of the University of Exeter.

He assists in marketing the practice in Bristol and to the south-west region construction market.

What will be the key characteristic of the industry in 2050?

The quality of urban design has continued to advance during the last decade. However, the pressure of population expansion and need to conserve energy will have a dramatic effect on how we all live and on the spaces we inhabit. Our role as designers will be to understand and use this technology in a way that enhances our urban experiences rather than being dominated by it.
