Project details

The design for the VIDENA's Velodrome was to sustainably upgrade the existing outdoor track built in 2014. To meet the Parapan and Panamerican Games, and the UCI requirements for a Category II velodrome, a building was added around the outdoor track.

Taking only 14 months to design and construct, the building included a roof and façade, a seating bowl and associated athlete and spectator facilities. Two new tunnels were excavated under the track to allow access to the in-field, whilst the track remained unaltered. The track was protected during construction works. Afterwards, the track required only minor repairs and was sanded and refinished, saving cost and critical programme time.

The Villa Deportiva Nacional Videna is a designated site for the Lima 2019 Panamerican and Parapanamerican Games. The existing sports park in San Luis district of Lima has been redeveloped to meet the sports infrastructure requirements to host the Games. In addition to a new Aquatic Centre, Athletic Stadium, Bowling Centre, and Multi-sports Arena, the team redesigned the existing Velodrome.  The Videna Velodrome is designed to host international cycling competitions at the highest level. It will provide a lasting legacy to Lima. After the games, the venue will be used by elite athletes for competitions and for the general public. Therefore, the design is purposefully flexible so that the amenities can be used to teach the smallest children, as well as for training the best athletes. In particular, the bowl has been designed to heighten the experience for both the tournament spectators and the athletes. The new bowl is continuous and packed tightly all around the track. This improves the acoustic atmosphere.
