Architect Nick Tyrer details the design of the 63,000-seat Suoyuwan Stadium, rationalising its connection between community spaces and the waterfront.
Dalian is a thriving maritime city, renowned for its key strategic location and strong naval importance. Over the years, it has evolved into a major hub for global shipping, commerce and industry, with the city boasting some of the world's largest ports and shipyards.
However, modern-day Dalian, with a population comparable to London, is a city whose identity is deeply connected to the sea but finds its access to the coastline largely dominated by the ports and shipyards that have driven its success.
The Suoyuwan Stadium is the first phase of a major urban regeneration project to reconnect the citizens of Dalian with the sea, creating new public spaces and residential areas on brown field sites. Therefore, beyond being a functional stadium, the architecture had to become a symbol of this vision; an invitation and advertisement to the citizens of Dalian for permission to take back the coastline.
The design of the stadium is inspired by its waterfront location and Dalian's rich maritime history. Its dynamic façade, resembling cascading waves and shimmering seashells, immediately catches the eye. It is our most ambitious design to date - the facade's interlocking forms aren't just beautiful; they enhance the spectator experience. At night, LED lights transform the stadium into a stunning display, highlighting its sweeping forms against the waterfront.
One of the standout features of the stadium is its double-helix ramp. A public space that spirals up the façade, offering breathtaking views of Dalian Bay. It's more than just a way to get around; it's a symbol of the stadium's connection to its surroundings, giving visitors a unique perspective of the waterfront.
The stadium's design is also efficient and environmentally friendly. Lightweight cable and tension systems for the roof, along with a tensile fabric façade, reduce the structure's overall weight and construction costs. This design minimizes the carbon footprint, aligning with modern sustainability goals. An all-electric heating system and energy-saving lighting further enhance its eco-friendly credentials.
As part of the wider masterplan redevelopment project, the project includes vibrant community spaces, complete with outdoor training pitches, parks and playgrounds. By integrating the stadium into its environment, BDP Pattern and Buro Happold have created a destination that attracts sports fans and serves as a gathering place for the entire community.
Suoyuwan Stadium is ready to welcome football fans from around the world. But beyond its role as a sports venue, it stands as a symbol of Dalian's commitment to progress, innovation, and sustainability.
