关于加拿大总督建筑奖
ABOUT THE AWARDS
The Governor General's Medals in Architecture, created by the RAIC, have been presented since 1982, continuing the tradition of the Massey Medals, which had been awarded between 1950 and 1970. The awards are administered jointly with the Canada Council for the Arts, which is responsible for the adjudication process and contributes to the publication highlighting the medal winners.
The biennial awards recognize and celebrate excellence in the recently completed built projects, providing an important source of understanding of the nature of Canadian architecture and the regional, cultural and historic forces expressed in the built environment.

获奖项目详解
WINNING PROJECT INTRODUCTION
The project at 60_80 Atlantic Avenue is the adaptive re-use and expansion of a heritage structure into a mixed-use complex in the heart of Toronto’s Liberty Village. The 1898 brick building at 60 Atlantic, a former wine warehouse, has been repurposed into office and commercial space with universal accessibility. The adjoining five-storey office building at 80 Atlantic continues the narrative with a contemporary material palette, creating a public piazza between the two structures. 80 Atlantic is built with mass timber, a renewable material and carbon sink, for much of its structural framework.

60_80Atlantic is located in Liberty Village, a neighbourhood in downtown Torontoknown for its repurposed industrial-era buildings.

Phase 1 (60 Atlantic) is an adaptive reuse of a Victorian-era wine warehouse and Phase 2 (80 Atlantic) is the first new mass timber office building to be.

Thepublic realm is enhanced by 60_80 Atlantic’s shared sunken courtyard servicedby a brewpub.
©BDP
60Atlantic features a Corten steel addition and a 60 supergraphic painteddirectly onto the brick.

Astudy of Liberty Village’s historical buildings shows three patterns of punchedopenings in the stacked brick façades, and 80 Atlantic combines all three in areconfigured and scaled-up version, on its north, east and west elevations.

Inplace of the traditional brick walls – massive but uninsulated and leaky – is ahung rainscreen system. The porcelain finish, is cut thinly, laminated to asubstrate and hung with thermally broken stainless steel clips. This mitigatesthe load and allows the building to maintain a masonry shell while alsoproviding a properly insulated and air tight façade. As for glazing, thetraditional punch windows have been repatterned (per a study of traditionalproportions) and, on the basis of an intensive micro-climate study, sunk deeperinto the north, east and west façades, for passive climate control.

Heavytimber and a variety of renewable, zero-carbon materials is widely used in theproject to achieve zero-carbon in the construction and future operation.Additional sustainable design strategies include a low window to wall ratio, ahigh performance building envelope, green roof, proximity to transit, integrated bicycle access and parking and charging stations for electricvehicles.

Juxtaposition of the interior of the adaptive reuse of 60 Atlantic into office space and the interior of new-build 80 Atlantic, which features the beloved aesthetic of brick and beam conversions with the amenities of a Class A office building.
©BDP
Inspired by its adjacent building, 60 Atlantic, the main entry circulation is housed in a volume that has been extruded from the building to maximize and regulate the floor plates. The new 80 also responds to its sister building in sinking the lobby a half-storey below grade to connect physically and visually across the shared courtyard.

Inorder to transform this traditional manufacturing typology into a leadingcommercial building, the project retains the crucial elements but reinvents theway they are constructed by employing the newest materials, latest sustainabledesign strategies and innovative construction processes.
