BDP designs latest Boxpark at site of historic Liverpool brewery

Taking residence at Canning Hall, part of the Cains Brewery Estate in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle district, the venue will comprise 16,000 sq ft of food and drink and leisure spaces.

Reflecting on the decision, BOXPARK development director Matthew McMillan highlighted the potential for a statement building, the heritage of the area and the possibility for a new train station nearby as key factors influencing the industrial location choice.

BDP’s adaptive reuse will see hospitality units arranged around a central dining area and events space embedded in the heart of the original brewery space. A mezzanine will be built to create 7,700 sq ft of new floorspace, supported by the units below and accessed via two staircases either side of the main entrance and a lift. The new level will also provide a seating area, bar, game areas and toilets.

An external terrace will link the main building to a series of shipping containers, a design feature synonymous with the archetypal BOXPARK brand and aesthetic.

As the architect for two of the developer’s flourishing London sites at Croydon and Wembley, BDP brings its expertise in hospitality and experience on former BOXPARK projects to this newest undertaking.

Reflecting on the approved plans for the all-day dining and entertainment venue, Gavin Elliot, Principal at BDP, said:

Having a BOXPARK in Liverpool makes complete sense. It is such a creative city with a global appeal and the adaptive reuse of the Canning Hall at Cains Brewery Village means we are adding more life to a historic city asset whilst bringing activity and prosperity to the area.

BOXPARK is a place for people. We look forward to seeing the design come to life with shops, bars and restaurants all rammed with groups of friends and families having fun.
