Project details

BDP worked with Frimley Health NHS Trust leading a multi-disciplinary design team to rationalise their estates, following their merger with Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Trust. Heatherwood Hospital is part of a wider rationalisation programme of the existing Frimley Health estate that includes disposal of surplus land to fund the new clinical centre at Ascot.

The hospital is a new, world-class dedicated planned care facility for non-emergency care in Berkshire and beyond. It welcomed its first patients in Spring 2022 and is critical in allowing the Trust to double patient numbers over the next decade. Putting a timely emphasis on wellbeing, the 11,500sqm Hospital includes six state-of-the-art operating theatres, plus outpatient and diagnostic facilities within a contemporary, highly sustainable building in an enhanced woodland setting.

Placing an ultra-modern hospital in an aged woodland makes the most of the natural, healing environment. The woodland is drawn into the building wherever possible; patient bedrooms have views across the treetops, access to outdoor terraces, café offers woodland views and a thriving biodiverse pond with nature walks. This proximity and access to nature has therapeutic benefits and improves recovery times.

This brand-new hospital will be the first of its kind on our road to recovery and reform, putting patients in need of non-urgent care first and helping them to get the checks and treatments they need. We are delivering on our promise to tackle the COVID backlogs by ramping up routine surgery and providing quicker diagnoses – alongside other initiatives which include new surgical hubs and Community Diagnostic Centres, helping us to deliver 9 million more treatments, scans and operations by 2024.
