The most significant new mainline station building in the UK for 40 years.
We expanded the concourse on two levels, arranged in a way that helps passengers get their bearings quickly.
We opened up 2,000 sq m (21,500 sq ft) of retail space at platform level, with a pub and restaurants on the upper concourse. The services, plant and storage functions were concealed underneath the concourses.
By adding a 500-space multi-storey car park with a linking bridge, we were able to clear all traffic from the station approach and create a wide new pedestrian path.
The latest engineering techniques supported a new monopitch roof, with ETFE panels to maximise natural light.
