Project details

Iconic 20th century building.

Working with engineers Ove Arup, we created an iconic modernist structure that was hailed as an architectural triumph when it was built in 1969.

Striking sculptural concrete edges to the four and five levels of car parking became the aesthetic driver for the building and provide shelter to the bus passengers below.

Everything is designed down to the last elegant detail including the airport style signage by our graphics team.

Brief

  • designed to accommodate 80 double decker buses and 1,100 cars it is one of the largest bus stations in Western Europe

Results

  • the bus station, which has been in continuous use since it opened with the design virtually unaltered, continues to arouse passion and controversy
