Facts

Project details

Designed from the inside out to benefit patients and speed-up healing time.

Wards are light and airy all with spectacular views across Portsmouth. One third of the beds are in single, en-suite rooms and there is more space between each patient on wards.

Energy use is minimised with heat recovery systems, low energy lights and high levels of natural daylight and ventilation.

A site wide strategy for the interior design, selection of finishes and wayfinding, brings a cohesive and unifying identity to the whole hospital.

Brief

  • major expansion and refurbishment of an existing acute hospital on a restricted urban site
  • double size of hospital provision while keeping all services running

Results

  • world-class care and world-class facilities
  • patients recover better and recruitment and retention of staff is easier
