Project details

BDP has provided planning consultancy services to the Trust, which represents five hospitals across Westminster and Hammersmith and Fulham. The Trust is one of the largest healthcare trusts in the UK and provides acute and specialist healthcare for around a million and a half people in north west London every year, as well as having a long track record in research and education.

We have given strategic planning advice on the redevelopment of the St Mary’s Hospital campus in Paddington, on delivering a vision for a £2bn Life Sciences masterplan. This will combine a major new hospital building to replace the current estate, and a research led 1.5million sqft commercial quarter at the heart of the Paddington Opportunity Area.

Our work has involved planning appraisals of early masterplan options, including the integration of tall building proposals in a sensitive heritage setting, to maximise the potential of the site and support the business case. We have led pre-application engagement with Westminster City Council on the future vision for the area, and the new hospital building.

BDP represented the Trust at the Examination in Public of the Westminster City Plan to secure a favourable policy position, including the removal of a proposed building height restriction for the Opportunity Area.

  • Long term planning strategy to support masterplan delivery, involving Local Plan allocation and planning application processes
  • Early involvement in masterplan optioneering to manage risk
  • Policy representations and EIP participation

  • Achieved a favourable change in policy during the Examination in Public of the Westminster City Plan
  • Lawful implementation of an extant consent for an outpatients building
