Project details

Mixed residential and commercial development in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter Conservation area of Birmingham.

The development includes re-providing updated modern facilities for a long established jewellery maker on its existing site whilst also providing smaller ‘maker’ space units for associated trades; bringing life back to the street level. 42 residential units are proposed above the commercial units on a very tight and restricted site. A combination of 1 and 2 bed apartments and some 2 bed duplex units.

Residential accommodation is aimed at individuals, couples and small families, in a range of well-appointed apartments. By drawing on prevailing characteristics of the area, including stepped massing along the primary frontages as well as into the depth of the site, pitched roofs with ‘top-shop’ windows and an appropriate palette of materials, the design offers a contemporary interpretation of the prevailing architectural context while presenting a distinct personality at this transition point between the Industrial Middle and the wider conservation area setting in the Jewellery Quarter.

Particular efforts have been made to balance the commercial imperative with planning guidance and the resulting proposal offers a full commercial and active ground floor to both Tenby and Albion Street frontages as well as providing regular volume and consistent floor level required for the Charles Green and Son facility, as well as configuration flexibility for the future.
