Project details

Two teaching buildings sit alongside an 11 storey staff apartment block and a sports building with canteen facilities. The cluster of buildings surround a central courtyard which provides external space for gatherings. The outskirts of the courtyard is covered by a canopy made out of ETFE, which can be adapted into a roof covering the whole courtyard.

Other flexible technologies incorporated into the scheme include relocatable pods, acoustic folding partition walls and merging separate drama and dance studios into one large hall.

Various leisure facilities were added to the existing sports hall such as pitches, an athletics track, a climbing frame and play areas. Vegetable plots encourage pupils to take ownership of the school plus new gardens set the scene for adventurous play as well as providing privacy from the public.

Brief

  • refurbish residential towers and a disused college into a flexible kindergarten, primary and secondart school
  • create high quality, safe, secure learning spaces where pupils and staff engage with each other

Results

  • a school that accomodates 1,180 pupils aged 2-15 years old, staff and wider members of the community
  • the transformation of an existing educational building into a 21st century school with facilities that can be adapted to meet the users' needs
