University of Southampton’s landmark Delhi campus completed by BDP

BDP has completed the design and delivery of the University of Southampton’s new campus in Gurugram, India, marking the establishment of the university’s first international branch under India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This milestone realises a vision of transnational higher education, bringing world-class UK academic excellence to the heart of India’s rapidly growing innovation corridor.

The newly completed campus, situated within the 60-acre International Tech Park in Sector 59, Gurugram, has been sensitively designed by BDP to support the University of Southampton’s triple-helix model of education, research, and enterprise. By repurposing and transforming an existing office building, BDP has created a dynamic, flexible facility that marries cutting-edge learning environments with collaborative spaces, designed for diverse pedagogical styles.

At the heart of the campus are versatile teaching areas: modular lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and open collaborative zones that can effortlessly transition between formal teaching, independent study, and research or enterprise activities. Dedicated innovation space creates meaningful interaction between academia, government, and industry, forming a powerful engine for knowledge exchange. BDP’s designers have drawn on the University of Southampton’s maritime heritage and verdant landscapes while creating a warm sense of place rooted in India’s rich cultural traditions.

Sustainability lies at the core of the design. The campus benefits from its location in a LEED Platinum–pre-certified technology park and incorporates accessibility and environmental sensitivity into every part of the building, from ramped access and lifts to high-efficiency systems for air filtration and conditioning.

With the campus now officially open, the University of Southampton is welcoming its first cohort of students, offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including Computer Science, Business Management, Economics, Accounting & Finance, FinTech, and International Management. These degrees follow the same curriculum and grant the same University of Southampton qualification as their UK counterparts.

BDP worked closely with the University of Southampton and its operational partner Oxford International Education Group to deliver this transformative project. The global education design team, in collaboration with BDP’s New Delhi studio team, focused on building a campus that supports meaningful interaction between students, staff, and industry partners. The result is a future-facing educational environment that equips students to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

The inauguration of the campus by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini marked a historic moment, not only for Southampton and BDP, but for UK-India educational ties more broadly.
