The South Campus of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) Suzhou Campus was conceived to support the university’s expansion to a student population of 15,000. As China’s largest international branch campus, XJTLU offers a unique dual-degree model - awarding qualifications from both Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool.

Drawing on our global campus design expertise, our Manchester, Glasgow, and London studios collaborated with our local Shanghai studio to create a campus that harmoniously integrates British and Chinese academic traditions.

The masterplan reflects Suzhou’s heritage, drawing inspiration from the curved architectural style of its classical gardens, and featuring a central lake, anchoring the landscape and reinforcing the sense of place.

The circular campus layout arranges six faculty buildings around a central landscaped courtyard, accessed via a single entrance boulevard. A 14-storey laboratory tower acts as a beacon for orientation and wayfinding. The International Business School’s glazed façade and solar-shading louvres optimise daylight while reducing heat gain. Pavilion buildings within the courtyard encourage informal collaboration and social interaction.

With all programmes taught in English and students from over 30 countries, XJTLU fosters an inclusive, globally minded academic community. The campus design supports accessibility, openness, and intercultural exchange.

The South Campus has become a dynamic hub for learning and innovation, housing initiatives like the International Innovation Hub and Technology Transfer Centre, and reinforcing Suzhou’s role as a global education and research destination.
