BDP Quadrangle advances Canadian Healthcare portfolio with QEII Health Sciences Centre Masterplan

BDP Quadrangle and FBM Architecture of Halifax have been selected to develop the masterplan for the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre (QEII) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This marks our second major healthcare masterplanning project in Canada and reinforces our ambition to be the firm of choice for healthcare planning and design across Canada.

The QEII Health Sciences Centre encompasses 10 buildings across two sites - the Halifax Infirmary and Victoria General campuses. The team will collaborate with Nova Scotia Health, Build Nova Scotia and the Department of Health and Wellness to conduct an in-depth review of existing facilities, identify opportunities for improvement and modernization and align the design direction with provincial healthcare priorities.

“We’re thrilled to be part of shaping the future of healthcare in Nova Scotia. This project reflects our growing role in Canada’s healthcare sector and our commitment to bringing global best practices in planning and design to local contexts. Across our studio, we’re working hard to become the partner of choice for healthcare clients nationwide - combining decades of international experience with deep local collaboration to create spaces that improve patient outcomes and community wellbeing.”

“Hospitals sit at the heart of resilient cities. Around the world, we’ve seen how well-designed healthcare environments can strengthen communities, support wellbeing, and improve people’s quality of life. In Halifax, this masterplan gives us the opportunity to bring our global design experience to Halifax, creating places that enhance access to care, connect communities, and help the region thrive."

“By recognising the needs of Nova Scotia’s growing population and the pressures facing healthcare systems everywhere, this new masterplan focuses on delivering the best healthcare campus in North America. Our ambition here isn’t small. It will help make access to care easier, reduce wait times, and give healthcare providers the flexibility to meet the needs of every patient.”

The masterplanning work is expected to be completed by early 2027.

This project is a milestone for the Toronto studio, as we continue to leverage our global expertise to deliver high-impact healthcare projects in Canada. We look forward to sharing updates as the work progresses.
