BDP was appointed to develop, evaluate and coordinate design proposals for the Footprint Project working in collaboration with the Ri and project team. Our combined role recognises the sensitivity required by Westminster Planning and Conservation department when working with a building of this significance.

The phased project ultimately involves the conservation and sensitive repair and restoration of the historic building fabric, addressing energy consumption – to ensure a 35% reduction in operational carbon in Phase 1 – and charting a course to net‑zero emissions.

The road map to net zero strategy is informed by following the energy hierarchy and energy utilisation metrics to ensure the long‑term sustainable improvement of the building and how it can be experienced and used.

“With the world’s leading scientists of the past making scientific discoveries that continue to shape our world today, our building has a special place in the UK’s rich history of science.

“So those of us who are today’s custodians of this national asset have a responsibility to ensure that the integrity of our heritage is thoughtfully preserved, while meeting modern-day standards and public expectations as a home for science.

“We are grateful for BDP’s lead in developing this first comprehensive building conservation plan in over two decades, providing the framework through which we will preserve a rich legacy while continuing to inspire future generations through scientific discovery and education.”
