A world-class road/rail interchange linking the UK to the Continent.

Respect for the setting guided the design, with raised earth levels and perimeter planting used to visually and acoustically screen the terminal. The project included the design of 18 elegant white pavilion buildings positioned as focal points along the traveller’s route. Advanced modelling helped develop a traffic system that efficiently moves vehicles from the feeder motorway into the site and onto shuttles for quick departures.
The terminal was designed as a modern, coordinated facility, integrating roads, structures, lighting, landscape, and signage to maximise efficiency, reliability, safety, and security. The project balanced functionality with sensitivity to its location within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, earning a British Construction Industry High Commendation in 1993.
