The new 5,185m² Corporate Services Building at South East Technological University’s (SETU) Carlow campus is an exemplar in sustainable, next‑generation design, procured to provide a dedicated home for the university’s growing support services in response to increasing enrolment numbers.

A flagship addition to the SETU estate, the new 4 storey all electric near zero energy building (NZEB) establishes a welcoming arrival point for the campus while providing modern, flexible workplaces for more than 240 staff.

The building brings together several core support services and serves as the campus’s main reception. It includes a new restaurant and café, incubation space to support the region’s emerging fintech sector, meeting and collaboration rooms, and an external landscaped gateway plaza creating a unified home for essential supports functions and strengthening the overall student and staff experience.

"As we look around us, we can all appreciate the quality of this new space. It is a bright, modern, and dynamic environment. The building has created new opportunities for growth and collaboration with industry at SETU.
As a multi-campus university, the value of collaborative spaces is immensely important. This building enhances our ability to connect with colleagues and external stakeholders across the region. It is a clear symbol of SETU’s presence in the south east as a confident, modern, and future-focused organisation. We are incredibly proud of this space and see it as a benchmark in quality for future SETU developments".

Professor Veronica Campbell, SETU President

The main priority for the project was to achieve next generation energy performance within a controlled budget. The design team were able to use experience from working on the ESB headquarters towards this project. The design team applied proven cost-effective strategies to deliver an all-electric, zero fossil fuel building that surpasses NZEB standards and aligns with anticipated 2030 net-zero benchmarks.

The result is a simple, maintainable and future focused building that demonstrates how intelligent design and research driven innovation can significantly reduce environmental impact without increasing costs, while still providing a lovely workplace for campus staff.
